Welcome to the Burren Junction Historic Bicycles Walk
This self-guided walk takes you on a journey through more than 120 years of local history, exploring 29 significant sites that tell the story of our unique rural community. As you travel through the streets of Burren Junction, you’ll discover how the arrival of the railway, the development of the sheep and wool industry, the growth of grain farming, and the determination of local families transformed a remote stretch of black-soil plains into the thriving community we know today.
Each site reveals a different chapter of Burren Junction’s story. From hotels, stores and stock agents to churches, schools, the School of Arts Hall, the railway precinct and the famous Bore Baths, the walk celebrates the people whose vision, hard work and community spirit shaped our town.
The information featured throughout this walk has been drawn primarily from Visions of the Plains – A History of Burren Junction and District (Second Edition, updated to include events from 1988–2004) by Judy Field. We gratefully acknowledge Judy’s remarkable research and dedication to preserving the history of Burren Junction and the surrounding district.
We also acknowledge the many local residents, families and visitors who have generously shared photographs, documents, memories and stories over many years. Much of Burren Junction’s history has been preserved through these personal recollections. While memories may occasionally differ, together they create a rich and authentic record of life in our community.
Many of the historic photographs featured throughout the walk have been kindly loaned by local families and carefully restored to preserve this important part of our heritage. Their generosity has helped bring the stories of Burren Junction to life for future generations.
